Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls in Sandwich, IL

Engineered walls that hold grade, control water and create usable yard.

Retaining Walls in Sandwich, Illinois

A retaining wall is a structure, not a decoration. It is holding back soil that becomes much heavier once it is saturated, which is why the parts you cannot see matter most: a compacted leveling pad, a drainage stone core behind the block, filter fabric, drain tile with an outlet, and geogrid reinforcement on taller walls.

We build segmental block walls and natural stone walls, from a low border that levels a planting bed to multi-tier walls that turn an unusable slope into flat, usable yard.

Walls over a certain height require engineering and a permit in most local jurisdictions. We will tell you when that applies and coordinate it rather than building something that will not pass or will not last.

Why It Matters

Water is the real load

Every wall we build is designed to drain. Walls that lean or bulge almost always failed because water had nowhere to go.

More usable yard

Terracing a slope turns wasted grade into lawn, patio or garden space.

Built to be inspected

Where engineering or a permit is required, we handle it instead of hoping nobody notices.

Common Questions

How tall can a wall be without engineering?

Thresholds vary by municipality, and are commonly around four feet. We check the local requirement for your address before quoting.

Block or natural stone?

Block is more predictable, faster to install and usually less expensive. Natural stone costs more and looks unmatched in the right setting. Both last when built correctly.

Why is my existing wall leaning?

Nine times out of ten it is drainage - no stone behind the block, no drain tile, or an outlet that was never installed. That is a rebuild, not a patch.
