Project Overview
The existing beds were too narrow to hold anything but a single row of shrubs. Widening them gave room for real layering: structure at the back, mass in the middle, edge planting in front.
Hydrangea carries the summer show and holds dried heads into winter. Lavender needs the opposite conditions, so those sections were built up with amended, sharply drained soil rather than being planted into the same heavy clay as the rest of the bed.
Evergreen anchors were placed at the corners and at intervals through the run so the borders read as designed - not empty - once the perennials are cut back.
