Side-Yard Stepping-Stone Path

Side-Yard Stepping-Stone Path

A stepping-stone path through a shaded side yard, replacing a worn track in the grass with a stable, year-round walking surface.

Project Overview

Side yards are the part of a property that gets used constantly and designed never. Grass here had been walked out to bare soil, and it stayed wet.

Stones were set on a compacted stone base rather than directly on soil, which is the difference between a path that stays level and one that rocks and sinks after one winter. Spacing was set by walking the run, not by measuring it.

Shade-tolerant planting on either side handles the low light between the house and the fence line, and mulch replaced the turf that was never going to succeed there.
