Covered Terrace & Screen Planting

Covered Terrace & Screen Planting

A covered terrace off the back of the house, with layered screen planting used to block a neighboring sightline without walling the yard in.

Project Overview

The terrace itself is the easy part; the privacy problem is what shaped the design. Rather than a fence line, the screening is done in plant layers - upright evergreens for year-round mass, deciduous material in front for texture and seasonal change.

Layering this way blocks the specific sightline from the seating area while leaving the rest of the yard open, so the space feels larger than a fenced enclosure would.

Paving under the cover was set on a compacted base with fall away from the house, and beds were graded so roof runoff has somewhere to go.
